The New SAT Its Never too Early to Know the Facts

The New SAT Its Never too Early to Know the Facts The New SAT: Tips From A Private Orange County Test Prep Tutor Some students in their junior and senior year of high school will be able to take the current SAT, soon to be known as the old SAT. However, younger students will be taking the new SAT starting in 2016. Its never too early to start prepping for this new SAT now that we are on the countdown to the major change (READ: 5 Awesome SAT Apps). 1. Take a practice exam The College Board is planning to release preliminary information and a guide for the new SAT in the summer of 2015. Apparently there will be five practice tests available and its recommended that any student who will be taking the new SAT take one of these tests ASAP. 2. Keep on reading, keep on writing Because the essay portion of the SAT will experience substantial changes, students should keep up with their reading and writing starting now. Current students often report that they struggle most with the essay, either due to writers block or lack of practice. If the current SAT essay seems difficult, just wait for the new SAT! The 2016 SAT will require students to comment on the author’s opinion rather than their own. Students should start practicing their critical reading skills so that they can make a summary of the author’s opinion of just about everything they read, from a pop-culture magazine to the newspaper to a school assigned novel. 3. Work with a tutor Although it’s true that tutors will be learning about the new SAT along with their students, the majority of SAT tutors will take their own practice test to understand the intricacies of this new exam before they ever work with students. This means that your private Orange County SAT tutors will have a six-month advance from when their students will take the real exam. It’s recommended that students taking the new SAT buy multiple test prep books to supplement their studies until their tutors can get a baseline of what the average student gets on the new SAT (READ: A Timeline Study Guide For The SAT). 4. A few basic differences -The new SAT will be five minutes longer than the current SAT, not a big difference. -The new SAT will have a reading and writing section that’s evidence-based, an updated and more difficult math section, and an entirely separate essay section. -The new SAT will have only four answer choices to choose from, as compared to the five answer choices on the current SAT. This will make process of elimination easier for 2016 students. -The new SAT will not have penalties for incorrect answers. This will be a major change in the test prep process as students will need to approach the practical applications of choosing an answer differently. (Students who have taken the ACT will already be familiar with this test prep procedure.) -The new SAT will be on a 1600 point scale, while the current SAT has a perfect score of 2400. Tutors and parents are probably more familiar with the 1600 point score, because this was used up until the turn of the 21st-century. In short There are still several months left until the start of the new SAT, but students who will be taking it are advised to start preparing as soon as possible. Since the College Board is releasing practice exams in the summer of 2015, its recommended that students start their SAT prep at that point. Students who fall within both the new and old SAT exams, are highly advised to consult a tutor as to whether not they should take the current exam or if they should simply start preparing for the new one. How To Organize Bill Payments

How To Organize Bill Payments pexels.com Make a bill paying day. Every time you run out of an ingredient or type of food in your house, you do not go running to the supermarket immediately only to buy that one item, right? You either wait until you are low on food and must go shopping or you have given yourself a specific day of the week that you always grocery shop on. And you usually do not do so pell-mell, grabbing whatever you feel like and putting it in your cart, only realizing once you have arrived home that you forgot to buy some staple ingredients. No! You are much more organized than that in fact you sometimes even have a grocery list. Why should paying your bills be any different? Instead of trying to remember the due date of each bill payment and maybe missing it, assign yourself a day or two that is devoted to bill-paying. It should be the same day(s) every month and stick to that pattern. Decide that the 15th of each month (or the 1st and the 15th of each month) is when you are going to pay your bills. Choosing days closer to the days when you get paid is ideal so that you can be sure you have the money to pay the bills at those times. Go down your checklist of bills that need to be paid and sit there and do them all at once. That way, you will not forget or miss any and everything will be paid right on time (if not early)! Write it down. Sometimes it can even be hard to remember what bills you need to pay, not even mentioning when you need to pay them. Some are not monthly, which can be harder to remember, or their due dates can be different each month. The best way to keep your bill payments organized is to write everything down. Start at the beginning. What bills do you need to pay? How often? By which dates? Then write it down somewhere that you are going to look and check often. Are you the kind of student that writes everything on a whiteboard in your room to keep track? Do you live by the dictates of your planner and write everything down in it? Do you keep a piece of paper tacked to your fridge so that you see it each time you open it? Whatever is best for you, write down and keep your list there in easy access so that you never miss another bill payment again. pexels.com Keep everything together. A lot of companies have been slowly transitioning to only providing you with electronic bills that you can pay online. But many companies still prefer and insist on sending printed bills and those can be the hardest to keep track of. You have a busy daily life and sometimes, you can just toss the mail to the side. However, that is how bills get lost. And lost bills become unpaid bills and it can all be a big mess. Avoid this by keeping all your bills together in a safe place. As soon as you receive it, put it in the pile to be addressed on your bill paying day. If you have a space on your bookshelf, keep them held up on your fridge with a magnet, or safeguard them in a little basket; do what you need to to keep them together and in a place that you will not later forget. There is nothing worse than knowing you have all the bills and that they are all together but you still cannot pay them because you cannot remember where you hid them! You can also keep all your online bills in the same place. Email inboxes can be messy places! Create two folders devoted to bill paying. One folder can be labeled Unpaid Bills and the second Paid Bills. Keep those online bills in the Unpaid folder until that one or two days a month you sit down to pay bills, and once they are paid, move them into the paid folder!

(Source: StockSnap)Private tutorials are an opportunity for a student to go back over something they didn’t understand in class in a relaxed environment where they won’t be scared of giving a wrong answer or being judged by the peers.Sociologists have noted that it’s normally the upper classes who can afford private tutorials for struggling students. Additionally, th e children of the upper classes are statistically less likely to fail at school than those from the working classes, which you might think isn’t really fair.Private tutorials are a significant expense for some families and can put a bigger strain on those with lower household incomes.  That said, academic support can still help close the gap between the classes in terms of education as students can get help with subjects they might be having trouble with at school.Private tutorials and academic support provide students with a number of benefits: some children prefer to work in a group tutorial as they work better than they do in class at school.Let’s have a look at the two options available to parents and students: individual private tutorials and group private tutorials.A group class will have the costs divvied up between all the students. Group classes provide learning in a friendly environment where students are encouraged to share learning with each other. The classes normall y include a group no larger than 10 (though this will vary depending on age and subject) and students are supposed to learn from both the tutor and one another. Some subjects are better for group lessons than others, especially subjects like languages, music, sport and fitness, and maths.  On the other hand, group sewing classes or group exam prep classes aren’t really as good.It completely depends on what the objectives of the tutorials are...How Should Group Tutorials Be Conducted? You’ll read that you can get group classes in any subject you like for students in primary school, secondary school, and beyond.Group tutorials can be really sociable. (Source: Free-Photos)There are different types of group classes such as intensive tutorials, catchup tutorials during the school holidays, and preparation classes for the upcoming school year. The main benefit is that the tutors and students can develop a better rapport with one another than they can in individual private tutorials. They can also learn at a quicker rate than in class as their tutor can spend more time with them, adapt to their learning style, and help them achieve the grades that they really deserve.Another difference with group tutorial is that they tend to take place at a dedicated classroom rather than a student’s home.  Flexibility is essential for private tutors.  The more tutees the private tutor has, the more flexible they’ll need to be, both in class and when they plan their lessons.Private tutorials can take place in the evenings and during the school holidays.  This is especially true for the tutors on Superprof, who often offer tutorials to individual students and to groups of students in dedicated classrooms either at their home or elsewhere. Can you really teach all subjects to groups at any level?Even for the best tutors, there are some subjects that can’t be taught in groups.  A guitar lesson tends to be better with individuals whereas language lessons and subjects which require discussion are much better in groups.Group Tutorials: Why Learn in a Group?Learning in a group is a great way for some students to catch up with what they’re struggling with at school.Learning with others can be far more enjoyable than learning on your own. (Source: coyot)There are plenty of other advantages to private group tutorials.Firstly, the law of supply and demand can help: The more students in a class, the less per person that each student has to pay.Generally, a private tutorial costs between £15 and £30 per hour.  In a group class, a tutor could charge £30 per student for a two-hour tutorial. The student can learn twice as much for less. The tutor can also earn more. For example, £150 for two hours of classes with 5 students rather than £60 for two hours with a single student.Group classes can be more effective than individual classes: students learn together and share.  They also create social bonds with other students.  This can help students rebuild their confide nce after a bad year at school or when their confidence is knocked when they start struggling in a certain subject.Let’s consider a Spanish lesson, for example: having the group discuss a Spanish text and speaking to one another than encourage students to learn. Another advantage is that most teachers in state schools have to plan a class for dozens of students at once.Even with the best intentions and a myriad of teaching approaches, they can’t always teach in exactly the way they’d like.  Instead, they may have to digress, focus on a particular point, and make sure every student is on the same page before advancing.Let’s go back to our example of a Spanish class. Rather than doing a list of irregular verbs, a private tutor could make Spanish conjugation into a game. How?By incorporating the verb conjugations into simple phrases in a conversation with the students.  Thus, they’ll improve their speaking and listening skills without realising they’re even studying.Private tutorials are an opportunity for students to catch up, consolidate their studies, and feel equal to their peers by being helped academically in the heart of a group experiencing the same difficulties as them. What Are the Disadvantages of Group Lessons? It’s not all good, though. Everything has its pros and cons.Of course, group tutorials aren't always fun and games. (Source: WokinghamLibraries)A private group tutor summed it up perfectly:“One of the disadvantage of group classes is that certain students are more advanced than others, which can demotivate those who don’t have the resources to catch up with them.”The problem is that not every student advances at the same rate, just like in primary school or secondary school. There’s also geography. If students need to travel across town by car, bus, tram, or metro to get to the classroom, they can get demotivated on the way.  In some cases, parents just don’t have the time to take their kids to another class. Not bothered by the disadvantages? You can find a tutor on Superprof easily by searching your subject and where you live. This will provide you with a list of tutors providing academic tutoring in your area. If you select “via webcam” when you search, you can find an online tutor. If you're worried about the cost or getting the wrong tutor, don't forget that most of the tutors on Superprof offer free tutoring for the first hour so you can see if you or our child get along with them and whether the tuition they're offering is for you.Interesting in providing your own private tutoring services? If you create your profile on Superprof, you can offer instruction in plenty of subjects including physics, mathematics (calculus, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, etc.), chemistry, biology, English, French, Spanish, etc.You just have to create your profile and state what you teach and where you teach it. You have the option of offering individual tutorials or group tutorials. As we mentioned earlier, you can also offer online tutoring via webacm. However, unless you and all your students have a really good internet connection, this is much better for one on one tutoring than for group tutoring jobs. With all that said, nothing's impossible and since you're your own boss, it's up to you to decide to solution that works for you and what you want to teach!

Arizona State University A Student Interview

Arizona State University A Student Interview Armin earned his bachelors degree in physics from Arizona State University. He specializes in economics tutoring, Mandarin Chinese tutoring, and a number of other subjects. Below, he shares his experience at Arizona State University: Describe the campus setting and transportation options. Armin: Arizona State University offers a very diverse campus. Bikes, scooters, and longboards are possible modes of transportation, but there are certain areas where only walking is allowed. Buses are available to take you to other campuses and there are free buses to get you around Tempe. Parking on campus is hard to find. How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Armin:The professors are very friendly and you can always schedule appointments with them. The teaching assistants are all really nice, as are the academic advisers. Everyone is readily available when students need assistance. How would you describe the dorm life rooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Armin:Dorm life, for me, was very closed in because the people on my floor did not interact much. However, I had a great relationship with my roommate who was from China. Regardless, ASU is so big that youll run into people and form friendships constantly. Dining options are great, as there are many places for students to eat on campus. Which majors/programs are best represented and supported? Armin:The ASU business school is one of the top business schools in the country. Engineering is a pretty popular major as well. I studied physics because it was very fascinating to me. The university, I would have to say, gave me the best possible teachers to teach my major-related courses. How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Armin:It was very easy to meet others and make friends. There are countless groups and organizations available for students to get to know one another. I think Greek life is not as prominent at ASU as it is on other campuses. How helpful are the Career Centerand other student support services? Armin:The Career Center helps many students prepare for the post-college transition. Many of my friends attended the recruiting events, but I have not heard of any receiving job offers as a result. How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Armin:The libraries are great. The main one, Hayden, is very large and partially underground. The student union has good food and great places to study. Dorm lounges are alright places to socialize and study as well. Describe the surrounding town. Armin:ASU has the Marquee Theatre which has popular bands playing quite often. Mill Avenue has many food options and other activities, and its also within walking distance of campus. How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Armin:Some classes are huge, while some are small. It really depends on the major and level of the course. I would say the class sizes were appropriate for the subjects taught. Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Armin:The experiences are plenty. I got to perform a piano song in front of an audience, study country music (something I knew nothing about), learn Chinese, and come up with my own dance routine and perform it. I had a lot of great experiences at ASU. Check out Armins tutoring profile. The views expressed in this article do not necessarily represent the views of Varsity Tutors.
